Antique 1874 Signed Arsenic Stash Ring in 18K Gold

€0,00

An exceptional and intellectually intriguing artifact of late 19th-century jewelry, this rare arsenic (poison) stash ring was crafted in Malmö in 1874 by the Swedish goldsmith Gustafa Dahlgren. Pieces of this nature occupy a fascinating intersection between adornment, symbolism, and the discreet mechanical ingenuity prized during the Victorian era.

Executed in warm 18 karat gold, the ring features an oval bezel finely engraved and centered with a bold black cross motif  a design both visually striking and historically evocative. The shoulders display elegant twisted and foliate elements, demonstrating the refined handwork characteristic of Scandinavian goldsmithing of the period.

The hinged bezel opens to reveal a minute concealed compartment. Given its extremely small scale and unpierced construction, the ring is consistent with the 19th-century tradition of  poison or arsenic rings, designed to discreetly hold tiny quantities of powdered substances.

The interior bears clear Swedish hallmarks including the maker’s mark G.D for Gustafa Dahlgren, Malmö assay marks, and the date letter for 1874, firmly anchoring the piece in its historical context.

Lightweight yet rich in narrative presence, this ring is best appreciated not merely as jewelry, but as a miniature historical object  a wearable artifact that speaks to Victorian attitudes toward secrecy, symbolism, and personal adornment.

Poison rings experienced periodic revivals throughout European history, but 19th-century Scandinavian examples are notably scarce. It would sit equally comfortably in a serious antique jewelry collection or within a cabinet of curiosities devoted to the more enigmatic forms of personal adornment.
