Belle Epoque/Edwardian (c.1910-1915) Peridot, Diamond and Pearl Festoon Necklace

This original Belle Époque festoon necklace is arranged around a vivid round peridot, framed by twelve rose-cut diamonds and creamy seed pearls. Two smaller round peridots mark the shoulders, from which two fine pearl-set swags curve towards the centre. Below, three articulated chains descend to pear-shaped peridot drops, with the middle drop falling slightly lower.

The proportions are beautifully considered. The double swags sit lightly across the neckline, while the three peridot drops move independently below. Despite the intricacy of the construction, the necklace feels delicate rather than formal or heavy.

Created during the Belle Époque (the same turn-of-the-century years known in Britain as the Edwardian era) the necklace reflects the period’s fascination with lightness and movement. Platinum allowed jewellers to produce increasingly fine, lace-like structures that would have been impossible in softer metals alone. Here, the white metal almost disappears against the skin, leaving the pearls and bright yellow-green peridots suspended across the neckline.

The contrast between cool platinum, warm 14K yellow gold, creamy pearls and six lively peridots is particularly striking..
